Project

Healthy Waters, Informed Communities

Coastal communities face increasing risks from sewage spills and variable water quality, yet reliable information is often limited and difficult to access. Women, families, and other sea users rely on these waters year-round for recreation and social connection, often without knowing local risks. This project will co-produce clear, trusted, bilingual guidance on water quality and sewage spill risks with three communities along the Bristol Channel. Through workshops and community-led content creation, we will work with sea users to identify key information needs and shape effective communication approaches. The project will deliver short- and long-form videos for social media outlets, alongside simple guidance materials to support sea users to understand local water quality, reduce exposure to pollution risks, and make informed decisions about sea use. By combining scientific evidence with local knowledge, the project will strengthen environmental awareness and wellbeing and develop a network of coastal champions.

This project will engage women and families in coastal communities focusing on three designated bathing water sites with contrasting water quality profiles (Ogmore, Porthcawl, Llantwit Major), and will involve a range of users including surfers, sea swimmers, dippers, and lifesaving club members.
