How Green is Too Green?

Established in 2020, Fixing for a Future is a community that looks to increase an understanding of climate change in its local community. They have established a tool library, and they host skills-sharing workshops and repair cafes at schools and libraries across East Lothian.
Up until now, the group has focused promotional messaging on the social and economic benefits of their activities—learning skills, making friends, saving money—however, they question whether potential participants are being put off by a perception that climate action is not ‘for them’.
The group will now use their RSE award to investigate how best to appeal to a wider audience while staying true to climate action goals by asking the question: How Green is Too Green? The research, conducted with volunteers, tutors and workshop attendees, aims to gain insight into motivations for engagement, the extent to which behaviour and mindsets have changed, and the significance of how climate action is framed. The resulting responses will form the basis of a toolkit/online resource containing guidelines and recommendations for new climate action groups seeking to engage audiences and amplify their impact.
