Small farms and crofters in Lochaber have difficulties accessing private kill abattoir services. Travelling long distances to existing abattoirs has a negative impact on the well-being of beasts; has a high cost in terms of mileage for the producer; and a negative impact on the environment because of carbon emissions.

The consequence is stressful for the beasts; business-challenging costs to producers; fewer options for local consumers; and risks to food security in our area.

Much recent research shows that the problem is real – but offers no solution. The problem cannot remain everyone’s and no one’s. This project is to research the feasibility of creating an abattoir, potentially including meat processing and sales, near Fort William for the wider Lochaber area.

The objective is to improve local food systems and reduce carbon emissions. A simplified and shorten supply line could offer multiple benefits to Lochaber.
